About
Newark Educators Community Charter School

NECCS is recognized as one of the top schools in Newark for achievement, consistently outperforming other schools in Reading and Math on the NJSLA statewide assessment. Our approach to developing our scholars’ minds, hearts, and characters is founded on high expectations, rigorous instruction, and a caring community that supports the holistic growth of children and educators.
Our Pre-K students explore, discover, and learn through the Tools of the Mind curriculum. Tools of the Mind engages our Pre-K students in activities designed to support the development of literacy, math, and science skills in concert with self-regulation and executive functioning, all of which prepare them for Kindergarten. Our elementary scholars in grades K-4 utilize several structured curricula that guide and enhance student learning and achievement. The Fundations phonics program presents a carefully structured reading, spelling, and handwriting curriculum, Readers and Writers workshop builds strong reading and writing habits for the whole class while small-group guided reading supports individual readers’ development of strategic actions for processing new texts at increasingly challenging levels of difficulty. Literary skills are enhanced through adaptive learning platforms such as Newsela, Smarty Ants, and Achieve 3000. For Math, NECCS uses the Envision Math series enhanced by adaptive online learning platforms SuccessMaker Math and Reflex Math, which meet students directly at their level. Science is taught through experiments and observations of phenomena in nature using the hands-on Full Option Science System (FOSS) and Social Studies utilizes the Inquiry Ed curriculum which emphasizes inquiry-based learning and community action in the classroom. Co-curricular activities include Spanish, Dance, Coding, and Art. We celebrate student success through monthly perfect attendance awards, academic achievement recognition at the end of each marking period, and the Star Student Breakfast, honoring those who exemplify our D.R.E.A.M.S. motto (Determination, Respect, Excellence, Attitude, Motivation, and Safety). Each grade also showcases their talents in regular assemblies. Staff are recognized monthly with the Making a Difference (M.A.D.) Award, twice yearly for perfect attendance, and annually for outstanding performance. All students receive Chromebooks, with K-4 scholars utilizing them for classwork.

NECCS partners with organizations like Creating a Breakthrough, Girl Scouts, the Youth Development Clinic, and Imagine Newark to provide enrichment and support services, including mentoring and grief counseling. Our breakfast program starts at 7:15 AM and an aftercare program is also available from 3:30 PM – 6:00 PM with snack and homework assistance for PreK-4th grade.
