About the school

Preparing Students for Life Beyond the Classroom

Marion P. Thomas Charter School (MPTCS) provides a culturally rich educational experience for scholars from PreK through 12th grade. For more than 25 years, MPTCS has served children and families from Newark and the surrounding communities with a mission to cultivate successful, lifelong innovators who use their passions, character, and intellect to strengthen their community and the world beyond.

Known as “The Village,” MPTCS has four schools, each offering distinct learning experiences while sharing a commitment to academic achievement, innovation, character development, and family and community engagement. Sankofa Academy, serving Pre-K through Grade 3, emphasizes whole-child development and draws inspiration from the Sankofa philosophy of learning from the past to build the future. ImPACt and STEAM Academies serve students from Pre-K through Grade 8, providing rigorous academics, enrichment opportunities, and hands-on learning experiences. Marion P. Thomas Charter High School serves Grades 9–12, completing the network’s college- and career-preparatory continuum.

Across the Village, scholars have access to STEM, visual and performing arts, athletics, extracurricular activities, student support services, and career-focused learning opportunities.

Grounded in the belief that “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child,” MPTCS brings together educators, families, community partners, alumni, and students to educate, inspire, and prepare Newark’s next generation of leaders.

Our Core Values

Our schools' core values are represented in our crest:

Sankofa

We honor and learn from our past, using the wisdom of those who came before us to shape a stronger future for our scholars and our Village.

Tiger Encased In A Heart

The tiger represents strength, courage, and determination, while the heart reminds us that everything we do is grounded in love, care, and commitment to our scholars.

Torch

The torch symbolizes the light of education, inspiring our scholars to do their best to discover their full potential, and illuminate the way for others.

Tree Of Knowledge

The Tree of Knowledge represents continuous growth, deep roots and a connection to the community, and the power of learning to help our scholars develop, flourish, and reach new heights.
Principal Spotlight
At Sankofa Academy, my vision is for every scholar to feel valued, take pride in their roots, and see limitless possibilities for their future. I believe educating the whole child means nurturing curiosity, building confidence, and partnering with families so every child has the support to reach their full potential.

- Fatara Hutchins

Principal of MPTCS Sankofa Academy

Fatara Hutchins serves as Principal of Marion P. Thomas Charter School’s Sankofa Academy, bringing over two decades of experience with the Newark Board of Education. Born and raised in Newark, Ms. Hutchins has served as both a teacher and an administrator, developing a strong foundation in classroom instruction and educational leadership. Her personal connection to the city, combined with her professional experience, informs her understanding of the community and the children and families she serves.

At Sankofa Academy, Ms. Hutchins leads a school grounded in the belief that understanding the past helps scholars build a meaningful future. Inspired by the Sankofa principle, the academy connects learning with history, culture, and identity while preparing children to become independent thinkers and engaged citizens. Its educational approach emphasizes the whole child, pairing strong academic instruction with opportunities to develop confidence, compassion, responsibility, and the skills to work well with others.

In her role as principal, Ms. Hutchins guides the academy’s work to create a safe, welcoming environment where scholars can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Family partnership is central to this work, with open communication and opportunities for parents and caregivers to participate in their children’s education. Through a school community that values cultural pride, curiosity, and belonging, Sankofa Academy encourages every scholar to recognize their strengths, reach their full potential, and envision the contributions they can make to their community and the world.

Principal Spotlight
My vision is for every scholar to feel seen, challenged, and supported as they discover their strengths and shape their future. Together with our families and community, we will prepare students to graduate with the knowledge, confidence, and character to pursue their goals and make a meaningful difference in the world.

Her professional background includes serving as the English, Art, Music, and Library Department Chair at Newark’s Science Park High School. She has also served as Marion P. Thomas Charter School’s ESSA Coordinator, supporting communication with families about educational programs and teacher qualifications.

Why Parents Choose Marion P Thomas Charter School

When I attended Marion P. Thomas, some of my favorite things were the clubs, the sense of togetherness, and the incredible school spirit. There was always a strong feeling of community, and those experiences are memories that I still carry with me today.
When it came time to choose a school for my daughter, I knew I wanted her to have the same opportunity to be part of this community. I chose MPTCS because of its strong academics and the variety of programs it offers. I have also been impressed by how welcoming and helpful the staff are. They listen to parents and make an effort to address concerns and implement changes, even when those changes may take time.
It is a wonderful feeling to see my daughter creating her own memories at a school that was such an important part of my childhood. Being an alumna and now a parent gives me a unique perspective, and I truly appreciate the opportunity for my daughter to experience the academics, programs, school spirit, and sense of community that made MPTCS special to me.

A. Spruill

Parent of a 6th Grade Student
I love the family environment of the school. Even teachers who haven’t taught my daughter yet know her and take the time to interact with her. It’s clear that you care about her growth as a whole person, not just academically. She loves being part of this community, and you truly feel like a second family. I can’t wait to see the magic unfold as she continues to grow with you.

I. May

Parent of a PreK Student
What has impressed us most is that even our youngest Pre-K scholars are given meaningful opportunities to learn, participate, and shine. They are included in clubs, field trips, school activities, and the traditions that make school exciting, while also learning responsibility, routines, accountability, and pride in being a scholar. MPTCS' ImPACt Academy holds high expectations for its scholars and its families, and we value that tremendously. It is the kind of place that doesn’t just invite parents to show up, it makes you want to show up.

School Programs

Great Oaks Legacy gives students opportunities to experience college-level academics while they are still in high school. Through Advanced Placement courses and college dual-enrollment opportunities, students can challenge themselves academically, explore subjects in greater depth, and in some cases earn college credit before graduation.

Program 1

MD FAME provides career day style experiences for students featuring doctors and surgeons who share their journey in the medical field. At the start of the year, students complete a survey to gauge interest in medical careers, with a focus on encouraging students of color to explore pathways in medicine, where they are historically underrepresented.

Program 2

Students in grades 5th - 12th participate in the Students 2 Science program which includes virtual labs (V-Labs) and visits to a professional lab for STEM Career Day. Students engage in hands-on experiments and learn directly from scientists working in the field.

Program 3

CinemaKidz is a creative enrichment program that introduces scholars to filmmaking, animation, and storytelling. Through guided projects, scholars have opportunities to develop story ideas, create characters and props, explore acting, and learn how to film and edit original productions. Activities vary by class and give children opportunities to express themselves through art and technology.

Program 4
